Sterilizing Bottles
Modern bottles are not really suitable for sterilization in boiling water because they are made from plastic and so will float. However, it is possible to use an electric unit for sterilizing bottles which uses steam, it can hold a minimum of 6 bottles at a time plus teats and dummies. Sterilization is complete in around 10 minutes and, if left unopened, the bottles will remain sterile for up to three hours.
Another way to use steam for sterilizing bottles is with a container which goes inside the microwave, again this will enable equipment to stay sterile for up to three hours but please check that it is microwave safe and does not contain metal before trying this method.
Finally, sterilizing bottles in cold water using a non-toxic sterilizing solution, such as Milton, in a container deep enough to fully submerge all bottles, is a cheap and relatively convenient method which is kind to bottles and teats. Equipment left in the fluid will remain sterile for 24 hours and as the solution is available in liquid or tablets it is very easy to take with you wherever you go. This method will take longer than with steam, generally about 30 minutes, so you may find you need a few extra bottles in use.
Bottles can be put through the dishwasher to give them an initial wash, and specially adapted baskets are available so that the teats and dummies do not get lost, although you will probably find that the teats will still benefit from a good wash using a bottle brush prior to going in the dishwasher. Bottles with disposable pre-sterilized inserts are also available.
