Eyesight Foods
As eyesight degenerates with age eyesight foods can help to slow down this degeneration. This is not something your child will need to worry about for a long time but if they are introduced to the foods can help when they are young it is more likely they will eat them when they are older.
Foods that help eyesight include lots of vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin and omega 3 fatty acids. Fruits and vegetables are high in all of these especially winter squash, corn, peas and dark green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli and collard greens.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are pigments found in concentrated amounts in the retina. They help protect the eyes by filtering out blue light, the most damaging portion of the UV spectrum. They also act as antioxidants, scavenging free radicals and protecting the eye against damage caused by sunlight and lipid oxidation.
Smoking and lots of exposure to the sun have also been related to eyesight degeneration.
