Breastfeeding Pumps

By 'expressing' her milk using one of the many breastfeeding pumps available mum can ensure that baby will receive only her milk should she need to be away for a time, for example when returning to work. This can be achieved by manual massage or the use of a breast pump and then the milk can be stored in freezer bags (for up to four months);in refrigerated containers (for up to eight days) or in a bottle ready for use at room temperature for up to seven hours.

Expressing her milk will also ensure that milk production is maintained whilst mum and baby are apart and by using breastfeeding pumps mums also have the opportunity to fully drain their breasts thereby stimulating increased milk production. Feeding from a bottle is an entirely different experience for baby. When suckling from the breast he massages the milk out with his tongue whereas from a bottle he has the artificial teat much farther in his mouth and sucks harder making the milk come through more quickly. This also applies to dummies(pacifier) for the same reason. It is therefore advisable to delay using teat as well as breast until baby is used to feeding from mum and has developed a good sucking technique otherwise he may well decide he prefers the bottle. Some teats are slightly longer and therefore replicate the nipple more closely which may be helpful if you wish to try mixed feeding, you will find the choice of teat to be a very individual preference between you and baby.
