Breast Pain
One of the most common reasons why mums will give up breastfeeding in the early days is because of breast pain. The pain can be caused by various reasons, such as:
Engorgement
Engorgement can be the initial reason for breast pain caused by the breasts overfilling with milk and associated swelling, possibly caused by poor feeding techniques, not feeding often enough or after a period when mum and baby are apart.
Relief can very simply be achieved by breastfeeding or expressing milk; gently massaging the breasts or applying a warm cloth prior to feeding can help to get the milk flowing and so releive the pressure. Another remedy is to put cold cabbage leaves against the breasts, maybe inside the bra, not very scientific but it may be worth a try!!
Nipple Pain
If baby hasn't latched on properly this can result in sore or cracked nipples, we found cammomile cream very effective and soothing. Anything more serious than simple soreness needs a trip to the doctor's as it could be a sign of infection.
Blocked Milk Ducts
Similar to breast pain caused by engorgement except the milk cannot flow properly. This is not caused by infection and treatment includes changing the feeding position of baby and applying warmth to the breast.
Mastitis
Can be the result of a blocked milk duct which has become infected. This condition usually appears within the first month. Symptoms include pain;redness;swelling and heat in the breast; it can also cause high temperature and nausea. Requires urgent medical attention which usually comes in the form of antibiotics.
