Baby Sleeping Routine
It is important to get your baby into a baby sleeping routine not only so they get a good night sleep but also so you get some rest too. Some babies sleep much more than others, some sleep in long patches some in short.
In the early weeks your babies sleeping pattern is very unlikely to fit in with your need for sleep. Don’t try to catch up on housework while your baby slepps . Snatch sleep and rest whenever you can.
A baby who wants to sleep is unlikely to be disturbed by household noise so there is no need to keep the house silent while your baby sleeps. It will help if your child gets used to sleeping through a certain amount of noise.
You can encourage night time sleeping right from the start by teaching your baby that the night time is different from the day time. During night feeds:
Keep the lights down low
Keep your voice low and don’t talk much
Put your baby down at a regular time every night
Don’t change your baby if you don’t need to. Nappies can last up to 12 hours is wet only.
Try putting your baby down to sleep alone instead of letting them fall asleep in your arms. This will help them get used to settling themselves and let them know that when they are put in their cot with the light out it is sleep time. The longer you put off doing this the harder it will be to settle them later. The last thing you want is a child that will not go to sleep in their own room and refuses to go to bed.
